Car Dependency and the 4,774-Step American Day
A Stanford team counted the steps of 700,000 people. The average American logs 4,774 a day, well below the global norm. The reason isn't willpower. It's that America built a country you can't walk across.
Most of what this site covers is about ingredients: what’s in the food, what one government allows and another restricts. This piece is a deliberate step away from that, because the honest version of “why do I feel better in Europe” was never only about additives. A lot of it is that in Europe you walk, and at home you don’t, and neither of those is really a choice you made. It’s a choice made for you, decades ago, by the people who drew the maps.
Here’s the number that started me thinking about it.
4,774 steps
In 2017, a Stanford team led by Tim Althoff published a study in Nature that did something clever. Instead of a survey, where people cheerfully overstate how much they move, they pulled anonymized step data straight off the smartphones of 717,527 people across 111 countries. Phones are already in our pockets counting; the researchers just read the ledger. For the 46 countries with enough users to be statistically solid, they ranked the averages.
The global average landed right around 5,000 steps a day. Hong Kong topped the list at 6,880. The United States came in 30th, at 4,774 steps. Sweden sat comfortably in the upper middle at 5,863, paired with one of the lowest obesity rates in the set.
Now, 4,774 versus 6,880 might not sound like a canyon. It’s about two thousand steps, fifteen or twenty minutes of walking. But it’s a daily gap, repeated every single day, for a lifetime. Compound fifteen minutes of walking across forty years and you’re talking about a genuinely different body and a genuinely different set of odds. Small rules, compounded, until a whole population forgets there was ever a choice. That’s the thread running through half the stories on this site.
The more interesting finding: activity inequality
The step averages made the headlines, but the researchers’ real discovery was subtler and, I think, more useful.
They coined a term: activity inequality. It measures the gap inside a country between the people who walk a lot and the people who barely walk at all. And here’s the striking part. A nation’s activity inequality predicts its obesity rate better than its average step count does. It’s not just how much a country walks on average. It’s how unevenly the walking is distributed.
The United States ranked fourth from the bottom on this measure, meaning one of the widest gaps in the dataset between its activity-rich and its activity-poor. Sweden, by contrast, had one of the narrowest gaps. In a place like Sweden, the fit person and the sedentary person live closer together in their daily movement. In America, the marathoner and the person who hasn’t walked a mile in a month live in the same country but not, in any bodily sense, in the same one.
Why would activity be so much more unequal in one rich country than another? The researchers pointed at something concrete, and it’s the whole point of this piece.
Walkability is the hidden variable
When the team looked at what separated the high-step places from the low-step ones, the built environment kept surfacing. In cities designed so you can actually get somewhere on foot, people took more steps, and, crucially, the gap between the most and least active shrank. Walkable design doesn’t just raise the average. It lifts the people at the bottom, the ones who would never choose a workout but will absolutely walk four blocks to the train because it’s simply how you get to work.
That’s the difference between exercise and movement, and it matters enormously. Exercise is a decision. You have to want it, schedule it, change clothes for it, and a lot of people, reasonably, don’t. Movement that’s baked into the day asks for none of that. In Paris or Barcelona or Stockholm you rack up thousands of steps before you’ve had a conscious fitness thought, because the bakery, the office, the school, and the metro are all a walk apart and the walk is pleasant and safe. The city is doing the work. You’re just living in it. That’s why walking in Europe feels effortless: the effort was designed out of it a century before you arrived.
America built a country you drive across
The American number isn’t a moral failing, and I want to be careful here, because the easy version of this story turns into finger-wagging about lazy Americans, which is both unkind and wrong. The average American isn’t lazier than the average Swede. They live in a machine built for cars.
Look at how Americans actually move. Around 87% of US trips are made in a personal vehicle. Walking’s share of all trips has drifted down to under 7%. In US and Canadian cities, roughly nine in ten journeys happen by automobile, with transit and walking splitting the leftovers. This isn’t people rejecting their sidewalks. In vast stretches of the country there are no sidewalks, or they end abruptly at a six-lane road with no crossing, or the nearest anything is a fifteen-minute drive through a landscape built at the scale of the windshield, not the foot.
Postwar America made a series of choices that were rational one at a time and devastating in aggregate: single-use zoning that put homes here and shops way over there, minimum parking requirements that spread everything out, highway money that dwarfed transit money, and a cultural romance with the car that treated walking as something you did on a treadmill, indoors, on purpose. Each decision made the next car trip a little more necessary, until “just walk there” stopped being a sentence that made sense in most of the country.
Europe made different choices, though not always for noble reasons. A lot of European density is simply older than the car, streets laid down when the fastest thing on them was a horse. Then, in the decades when America was bulldozing streetcar lines, many European cities spent real political capital protecting their centers, pedestrianizing them, taxing fuel heavily, and building transit people actually want to use. The walkability that reads as charm to an American tourist is partly medieval accident and partly deliberate, expensive, sustained policy.
What this means for “feeling better in Europe”
So when you come back from two weeks abroad feeling lighter and clearer and you credit the food, you’re partly right and partly missing it. Yes, the portions were smaller and the bread was less sweet. But you also walked. A lot. Probably closer to that Hong Kong number than your American baseline, without once thinking of it as exercise, because you were just getting to dinner. The vacation didn’t only change what went into your body. It changed how much your body moved to get through an ordinary day.
That’s the humbling and, honestly, hopeful part. The step gap isn’t written into American genes or American discipline. It’s written into American zoning codes and traffic engineering, which means it’s the kind of thing a place can decide to change, and some American cities are trying. You can’t out-willpower a landscape built to be driven. But a landscape can be rebuilt. Understanding that the 4,774 is a design outcome, not a character flaw, is the first honest step, and it belongs right alongside everything else in the larger question of why Europe feels different in your body.
