Is Bisphenol AF (BPAF) banned in Europe?

What the EU does

Banned in food contact. Bisphenol AF is one of the hazardous bisphenols named in the EU's December 2024 food-contact regulation, the same measure that banned BPA and bisphenol S. The EU's approach was to treat the bisphenol family as a group problem, rather than banning one molecule and letting near-identical substitutes take its place.

BPAF is a fluorinated bisphenol used in some specialty polymers and coatings. Its inclusion is part of the same logic: keep the whole class of concern out of materials that touch food, on staggered transition timelines from 2026.

What the US does

No comparable ban. The US has no federal food-contact prohibition specific to bisphenol AF. It is a lower-volume specialty chemical than BPA or BPS, used in certain high-performance polymers, elastomers, and coatings, and it has been flagged in US research programs as a substance of interest for its hormone-related activity.

The transatlantic pattern here is the same as for the other bisphenols: the EU acted on the class as a precaution, and the US continues to regulate these substances individually and more slowly.
